The Big Bud legend originates from a possible cross in the 1980s between the first basic Afghani, Haze, and Northern Lights varieties. The resulting strain quickly spread through the underground market of the time. The precise origins of this formidable Indica-dominant variety are shrouded in mystery, but it appears that Big Bud was first developed in the USA, at the height of the American war on drugs. Big Bud's original breeders, anxious that unwanted attention from the law might force the strain to disappear forever, transported it to the safe haven of collectibles in Holland, where it was nurtured and genetically stabilised, quickly becoming a coffee shop favourite.

To obtain this autoflowering version, the Seedstockers team crossed an Afghani with a Skunk, the result of which was then crossed again with a great Magnum Auto phenotype. This led to the creation of an automatic strain that impacts your senses during cultivation with its striking characteristics, inherited from its ancestors. It typically reaches a maximum size of 100-130 cm, although it can grow a little taller outdoors, at most up to about 150 cm. It develops fairly wide leaves with a slightly lighter colour than many Indica-dominant strains, but with thick central stems that can grow considerably in diameter, helping the lateral branches support the weight of its renowned flowers, often without the need for supports.

Flowering Time

This strain has a full growth cycle of just 10-11 weeks from seed to harvest. It needs only 3 weeks of vegetative growth, followed by an 8-week flowering period. This is really beneficial for those looking for quick results or multiple harvests per year.

Outdoor Cultivation

Big Bud Auto can survive in most weather conditions. In fact, it's so easy to grow that it can even be cultivated in slightly colder climates. That said, it really thrives in warm, sunny regions like the Mediterranean, which are consistent environments with reliable doses of sunlight. The use of organic soil greatly improves this strain's terpene profile, giving rise to massive buds fully loaded with flavour. Outdoor growers who have the luxury of planting in April can easily get two harvests per year. Plant in 20 L pots or larger and be careful not to overwater so that the roots don't get lazy. Indoor Cultivation

Indoor cultivation allows full control over your plant's environment. Both a hydroponic setup and the SOG (Sea of Green) method are great options for getting the best indoor results, provided you replicate the warm climate conditions that plants need to thrive outdoors. The light cycle should always be 20 hours or more. We do not recommend topping the plants, as autoflowers do not like this practice. However, Big Bud Auto is a bushy and vigorous plant, so its growth still needs to be controlled by pruning the lower leaves so that air can flow easily through its huge buds, preventing the appearance of fungi.

Cultivation Tips for the Best Buds

1. Odour Control: If discretion is important, invest in an odour control system equipped with a carbon filter.
2. Support: Although Big Bud Auto is able to support the weight of its heavy colas, it is always a good idea to support its branches to prevent any breakage.
3. Ideal Conditions: The best growing temperature range is between 21 and 26ºC, with humidity levels between 50 and 60%. Keep the soil pH between 5.8 and 6.5 (5.5 – 6.5 in hydroponics).
4. Correct Nutrients: Use the right nutrients for each stage. During the vegetative phase, it will need a reasonable amount of nitrogen. During flowering, use nutrients with high phosphorus and low nitrogen content.
5. Harvest: Harvest your plants when at least 70% of the pistils have turned mostly brown. You can improve Big Bud Auto's yield capacity by regularly pruning the lower leaves and using low-stress training (LST) techniques.
6. Drying: Due to the size of its flowers, the drying process, which usually takes about a week, can in this case last up to 10 days or more. The buds are cured when they feel dry to the touch, but not brittle.
