What Are Triploid Cannabis Seeds?

Cannabis is normally a diploid plant — every cell carries two sets of chromosomes (2N), one from each parent. Triploid cannabis plants carry three sets (3N). Breeders create them by first inducing a tetraploid (4N) mother using colchicine, a natural alkaloid extracted from the bulb of the autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) that interrupts cell division. The 4N mother is then crossed with a normal 2N father — every seed in that cross is a true triploid (3N).
